Dear Students, Parents, and Community Members:
I am truly humbled and honored to have been appointed to serve as principal to the students, parents, and staff at Union Middle School. I extend my sincere thanks for sharing your children with us this year. I look forward to serving with a highly qualified staff and excellent students to provide the best educational program possible.

I am a graduate of Union High School, and I received my Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi State University. I hold a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Arkansas State University. Prior to being named Middle School Principal, I taught in the science department at the high school level here in the Union Public School District. I had great success in that capacity, and I look forward to carrying on that record of success at the middle school.

I am very passionate about education and students, and I know that we (staff, parents, and community) can work together to provide a rich educational experience that will continue to make our schools even better than it already is. I am very excited to give back to the kids and the community and I look forward to building on the already established tradition of excellence.

My greatest initiative is to provide the leadership that will foster a school environment that continues to implement “best practice” teaching strategies while utilizing differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all learners to the best of our ability. I believe that all students have the potential to learn and grow and should be provided with high expectations to assist in that process.

I also commit to provide students with a safe, consistent environment that focuses on positive behavior. I believe that we must continue to provide an educational program that is academically challenging and engages each student by linking the curriculum to previous knowledge and experiences.

Parents, teachers, support staff, and administration all have an important role to facilitate and encourage our children to take charge of their educations by becoming active learners. This year at Union Middle School we will be focusing on the 7 habits of effective leaders. We believe that leaders display the following habits:

1) Be proactive
2) Begin with the End in Mind
3) Put First Things First
4) Think Win-Win
5) Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
6) Synergize
7) Sharpen the Saw

We will be working with the students to develop these habits along with academic excellence. Those who show growth in these areas will receive rewards throughout the year.

Again, it is truly an honor to serve the children, families, and staff members of my hometown. I am very excited and will embrace the opportunity to join such a dynamic and highly qualified team that will continue to work to meet the needs of all learners. I look forward to an awesome school year.

Respectfully, Tyler Hansford, Principal

Mission Statement:

The mission of Union Middle School is to educate students of all backgrounds to be scholars and leaders in all sectors of society. As confident, self directed, supportive teachers, we will lead students to advance in knowledge, promote understanding, and serve their community.

Our challenge to our students:

You forfeit your chance for life at its fullest when you withhold your best effort in learning. When you give only the minimum to learning, you receive only the minimum in return. Even with your parents' best example and your teachers' best efforts, in the end it is your work that determines how much and how well you learn. When you work to your full capacity, you can hope to attain the knowledge and skills that will enable you to create your future and control your destiny. If you do not, you will have your future thrust upon you by others. Take hold of your life, apply your gifts and talents, work with dedication and self-discipline. Have high expectations for yourself and convert every challenge into an opportunity.
